ENDSARS: Gov. Sanwo-Olu vows to take action
The cries of Lagosians over harassment by SARS operatives have been heard by the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu – Sanwo-Olu assured the people of the state he will take action immediately.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state finally broken his silence on calls by Nigerians for the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) unit of the Nigeria Police Force to be scrapped.
The governor assured Lagosians that appropriate actions will be taken soon as Nigerians have been calling for an end to SARS for months, citing harassment and extra judicial killings of youths as reasons. The call was renewed on Saturday, October 3, after SARS operatives were accused of shooting dead a young man in front of Wetland Hotel in the Ughelli area of Delta state.
A video that went viral showed confusion around the area where the officers allegedly killed the victim and escaped with his vehicle – a white Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle. Several videos have also popped up on social media, showing illegal activities by the operatives in Lagos. In his reaction, Sanwo-Olu said the safety of Lagos residents is his priority.
His message on Twitter reads: “The safety of our residents is my number one duty as the CSO of Lagos. So, reading reports of seemingly unlawful exploitation by the people charged to protect is very worrying & needs to be addressed immediately.
Be assured that appropriate actions will be taken, & speedily too.” Other prominent voices have also spoken out against the recurring SARS brutality.
